Every month, students at On Track Wellness are introduced to a new “Word of the Month.” At first glance, it might seem like a quick lesson—a new concept or a word students can add to their vocabulary. Both are valuable and important. But what I’ve realized as a parent of two girls training in karate and BJJ at OTW is that the Word of the Month can serve as a powerful guide and partner in shaping not just how they train—but how they live.
It’s just what it sounds like. Each month, one word is highlighted, explained, and discussed. A sample list includes words like Discipline, Generosity, Courage, Integrity, and Drive.
The real beauty lies not just in teaching students the words in theory, but in how they’re woven into martial arts training—paired with short lessons about their real-life applications and the importance of living them out both on and off the mat.
For example:
We’ve been training at OTW for two years, which means my children have now encountered twenty (or so) different concepts. Can they recite them all and define each one? Maybe not. But the next time they hear those words, it won’t be the first time.
More importantly, because these words are taught through action, not just theory, they aren’t just a list—they’re becoming part of my kids’ character and their way of life.
Martial arts is an incredible environment to be tested, pushed, humbled, and strengthened—all in one place. A good Sensei or coach knows how to challenge students just a little more than they think they can handle, all without compromising safety.
In doing so, students naturally learn emotional regulation, perseverance, leadership, respect for others, and so much more—simply by showing up and engaging in the process.
As a parent, I’m deeply grateful. The Word of the Month reinforces the very values I care about and hope to pass on to my children. It invites me to bring the dojo home with us—into conversations in the car and discussions around the dinner table. When we’re intentional, we start seeing these words show up in daily life, in interactions with others, and in the choices we make.
To me, a good dojo isn’t just a place where kids learn to punch, kick, or submit an opponent. It’s a place where they grow—as individuals—physically, mentally, and yes, even spiritually. A good Sensei or coach doesn’t just care about who a student is on the mat, but who they’re becoming in the world.
The Word of the Month is one way this intentional, whole-person approach comes to life. It’s a reminder that martial arts isn’t only about competition or self-defense—it’s about building strength from the inside out. And in a world that often rushes past deeper lessons, that kind of teaching truly stands out.
As a parent, I’ve found the Word of the Month to be a beautiful bridge between the training floor and everyday life. I encourage fellow parents to lean into it—ask your kids what the word is, talk about what it means, and point it out when you see them living it out.
These conversations matter. They help our kids realize that what they’re learning isn’t just useful at the dojo—it’s valuable everywhere.
Curious about how martial arts can help your child grow in confidence and character? Come try a class and experience it for yourself. Or do what I did: sign your kids up—and then join the program yourself. It’s an incredible way to bond and grow together. We’d love to welcome you to the OTW family.
