About Eric Romo: Owner, Kuk Sool 4th Degree Black Belt, Shotokan 1st Degree, BJJ Purple Belt

I grew up in Houston and started training in Tae Kwon Do after being referred by a friend. After training for a couple years my parents noticed that I still enjoyed learning new skills but was not always excited to work with all the instructors. I made it clear I was willing to switch schools and start over as a white belt in a new style, so my dad took me the gym right around the corner to try a lesson. Walking in the door,  I instantly knew it was going to be different than what I had grown accustomed to. It looked and smelled clean, the students coming in for their next lesson looked excited, and the instructor teaching was motivating his students without yelling. The owner taught my introductory lesson and he could not have more encouraging. Within 24 hours my mom went back to enroll me and set in motion something that would  totally reshape my future. At age 12, only three years after starting with Master Mike and Kaori Nebgen, there was no doubt learning and teaching martial arts was what I wanted pursue in life. Master Nebgen hired me at age 15 as an assistant instructor and after spending some time with him outside of class it amazed me how dedicated he was not only to the current students, but growing a school that would truly serve the community. I continued to hone my physical and business skills over the course of the next decade and eventually become head instructor of the facility.  Losing my father to cancer in 2012, it was my family, friends and the martial arts community that kept me moving forward. In 2017 I decided it was time to start the next chapter in my life and went on tour with my friend’s band on the west coast. Just 2 days after returning from tour and crashing on my buddy’s couch in OB I had the itch to get back on a mat and train. I had seen a dojo just around the corner and decided to pop in and see if the head instructor would let me train. I was introduced to Nate and within just a few months we combined forces and have been working together since.

About William Cangianno: Jiu Jitsu Instructor and Black Anvil Black Belt

I have been competing my entire life, both in martial arts and other sports. I was born and raised in San Diego by a very loving mother and father and have lived here in this beautiful city my whole life. I began playing hockey at 7 years old, mainly because my dad said football was too violent so I chose hockey out of spite. Turns out I loved it and played for about 12 years competitively, through high school and college. I also started on the hockey team at Cathedral Catholic High School, and played for 3 years there. I then went on to attend Mesa College, after 2 years there, I transferred and graduated from San Diego State University with a degree in Sociology. I was forced into a life of martial arts at about 6 years old. My father and I started training at a local Tang So Do Academy, Kenyon’s Soo Bahk Do. This helped me to gain confidence and self esteem as a young child. I achieved rank of red belt, but stopped when my father injured himself and could not come to train anymore. I was working retail and met someone who would have the biggest impact on my life: Branden Guptill. He dared and challenged me to grow up and be a man. I cannot thank him enough for his guidance in life as a whole, not just martial arts. I would have definitely taken a different life path without him. He got me into his gym about 9-10 years ago to do Jiu Jitsu. I was so stubborn, I felt I could do anything easily. Boy was that a kick in the ego. My first days and months I was choked, exhausted, throwing up and not sure I could do this, but having the right people around you makes ALL the difference. Branden had me competing within about 6 months of training and I have never looked back.  I have competed at every belt level thus far. Seen the ups, downs, and hospital visits that go along with the nickname “Honu Spaz”, but I wear it with the utmost pride. I am currently a Black Belt Professor in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under Branden Guptill. This is my greatest physical life achievement thus far and I never knew how far this could take me, both spiritually and physically. I want to be able to pass along the friendship, love and great atmosphere that Jiu Jitsu has given me to everyone willing to learn and put in the time. I currently live happily in Linda Vista with Professor Sophia and our daughter, Nova. Hope to see you all on the mats soon!
